Career Mapping:  Setting a Course for Success

Ever feel like your career is taking turns you did not expect?  Are you on a path that is not fulfilling?  How can you utilize career mapping to help you strategically plan your next steps?

Career mapping is a strategic approach to developing a plan to advance short-term and/or long-term growth.  It requires you to be thoughtful about your career path.  If you feel you are in the right career, then it is helpful to map tangible actions, goals, skills, and personal ambitions to ensure strategic career advancement.

  • What interests you about your chosen career and why does it fit?

  • What are your top three career goals for the future?

  • Does your current position align with your longer-term goals?

  • What are your current talents, skills, and knowledge?

  • Are there actions you can take for the next year to advance your development?

  • What skills and knowledge do you need for longer-term growth?

  • Are there longer-term development goals you can set for the next five years?

If you find yourself unsatisfied in your current career, ask yourself these questions for longer-term career planning and mapping.

  • What do you value?

  • What do you want to achieve in your career?

  • What interests you?

  • What career paths have you not considered?

  • What skills and talents do you have that are transferable?

  • How do you present yourself in a resume and cover letter to avoid limiting the way hiring professionals see you?

  • How do you implement a strategic search?
