Networking & Its Importance in Your Career Journey

Network, network, network! You have heard it before and yet most of us do not actively stay connected to our contacts.  Many people wait until they are ready to begin a job search to reach out to former colleagues, previous supervisors, and friends in the same or similar professions.  While networking has always been important, it is essential today.  Working from home or having a hybrid schedule does not allow the same number of opportunities to connect in-person.

Let’s look at how and why it is important to utilize and grow your network to enhance your career journey, whether you are at the start, mid-point, or later stage of your career.

  • How can my network help me grow professionally? Most of us have had mentors, former bosses, or colleagues who we could go to when we needed advice.  Ensure that you stay connected to those individuals who are invested in helping you succeed. When a project has gone well or you have received a promotion, let them know. When you are having a challenging period at work, seek them out for counsel.  Over lunch, coffee, or virtually, ask them for guidance on what you can do to continue to learn and develop new skills in your field.

  • Can my contacts help me decide my next career move?  Reach out to your network to seek their advice on whether you should stay or go.  It’s good to have the input of others to assess if the “grass is greener” on the other side. Ask your contacts to help you discuss options, as well as how to build your career where you are.  Have you fully implemented your “tool kit” where you are, or is there more to learn?

  • How do I build my network? LinkedIn has become the best tool to connect and reconnect with people you know from your professional life.  In addition, you can utilize LinkedIn to find new potential connections, including professionals who are in fields that interest you. You should also consider joining professional organizations to build your network. Ask people you meet to connect you with other professionals. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and pursue interests outside of work. With things opening up again, consider attending professional conferences, networking events, and social functions. You never know where these connections might lead!
