Life’s Next Chapter

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”

-Pablo Picasso

Why is retirement from full-time work dreaded by so many people?

It is true that many individuals need to work as long as possible to ensure financial security.  But others could retire tomorrow and have the resources to live comfortably – yet, they choose not to.  Is it because they view retirement from work as retirement from life?  As individuals, aren’t we more than our resumes?  During these challenging times, what if your position is in jeopardy and you choose to retire.  Then what?

Like everything in your life, you get out of retirement what you put into it.  Let’s look at how you can make the most of the “next chapter” as the rewarding experience it can be.

Plan ahead

When you begin counting the days until you reach a certain age, it is time to have a retirement plan.  Decide if this is your last position or if you need to work for a few more years in a different capacity.  If you have a financial advisor or are managing your own funds, ensure you have the resources, budget and health insurance in place to live comfortably.  Have you paid off your mortgage?  Do you have additional debt? Are you going to downsize and if so, where?  We all know how fast 2-3 years go by, so start planning right away if you want to retire in the next few years.  When dealing with an unexpected job end, consider if you can retire or need to pursue another opportunity.

Think how you will maximize your freedom

It’s the first morning of retirement and there is no alarm clock ringing, no emails waiting in your inbox, and no texts from team members -- are you thrilled, or not sure what to do?  Embrace the freedom you have just acquired!  Plan those first few days with the “to dos” that make you the happiest.  Instead of a quick carryout coffee before work, relish a cup of tea outside with the book that has lingered on your nightstand.  Or take a long walk on this weekday morning.

Explore your talents and interests

Did you work in a field that did not require creativity?  Take a class through the local arts center.  Do you love children and do not have any young people in your life?  Become a reader at your local school or library when they re-open.  Are you unhappy with our country’s current politics?  Join other civic minded citizens and help new leaders get elected.

Get Involved & Give Back

Just because you are no longer working does not mean you cannot utilize your expertise.  You can donate your skills to a nonprofit organization or your local community center.  Consider becoming a mentor to someone who is an emerging leader in your field.  Serve on a nonprofit board of directors or a civic committee. Pay it forward in honor of the people who helped you along the way!

Retirement is a transition that can be rewarding and challenging.  If you are ready to plan your next chapter and need assistance, I am happy to help you as your coach to explore the options and create a plan.
